Choosing the Right Ramp Size for Your Trailer

Finding the perfect ramp size is crucial for the safety and comfort of your horses. The right ramp depends on both the width of your trailer and its loading height (the distance from the ground to the trailer floor). Here’s a breakdown to help clients select the correct ramp size:

Ramp Comes with all hardware

1. Trailers 6 ft to 6.5 ft Wide

  • Recommended Ramp Sizes: 5 ft wide x 2 ft long or 5 ft wide x 3 ft long
  • Description: These ramps are ideal for smaller trailers with lower loading heights, common in single-horse trailers or compact two-horse trailers. The shorter length provides a steeper angle, which is suitable for low trailers but may not be as comfortable for larger horses.
  • Best For: Ponies, compact trailers, and short trips where easy maneuverability is essential.

2. Trailers 7 ft Wide

  • Recommended Ramp Sizes: 6 ft wide x 3 ft long or 6 ft wide x 4 ft long
  • Description: A 7 ft wide trailer benefits from a 6 ft wide ramp for comfortable entry. The 3 ft ramp length suits trailers with moderate loading heights, while the 4 ft length provides a gentler slope for trailers with higher loading heights.
  • Best For: Standard two-horse trailers, typical horse breeds, and trailers with extra tack space.

3. Trailers 7.5 ft to 8 ft Wide

  • Recommended Ramp Sizes: 7 ft wide x 3 ft long or 7 ft wide x 4 ft long
  • Description: Wider ramps offer more room, reducing stress for horses as they enter and exit. For higher loading heights, a 4 ft ramp length provides a comfortable incline, while 3 ft is effective for shorter trailers. This setup is ideal for larger breeds and heavier trailers.
  • Best For: Larger two-horse trailers, three-horse trailers, and spacious trailers for long hauls or larger horses.

4. Trailers with Extra High Loading Heights

  • Recommended Ramp Size: 7 ft wide x 5 ft long (if available) for a very gradual incline.
  • Description: Trailers with high loading heights require longer ramps to create a comfortable slope, minimizing strain on the horse’s joints as they walk up. This size is less common but beneficial for high-profile trailers or those carrying horses that need a gradual entry.
  • Best For: Custom trailers, multi-horse trailers, and trailers for horses with mobility concerns.

We can customize your ramp to your trailer with a few measurements, (see the last photo).

General Tips for Ramp Selection

  • Steeper Angle: Shorter ramps (e.g., 2 ft) work best with trailers that sit low to the ground.
  • Gentler Slope: Longer ramps (e.g., 4 ft or more) create a gentler incline, ideal for trailers with higher floors or taller horses.
  • Wider Ramps: Necessary for trailers 7 ft wide or more, providing horses with more space to balance during loading.
